Maternity Packages in Vietnam for Foreigners: 3 Tiers

Obstetrician and nurse carrying newborn baby trolley

Giving birth in Vietnam — many foreign families stay to deliver instead of flying home, because all-inclusive maternity packages at private/international hospitals cost a fraction of US, Australian or European prices at comparable quality. This article compares 3 package tiers and what HI covers.

3 maternity-package tiers

  • Public hospitals (Tu Du, Hanoi Obstetrics, National Obstetrics): top obstetric expertise, best with difficult cases. Service delivery packages (service rooms, chosen doctors) VND 15–40M; natural birth well HI-covered. Downsides: crowded, little English (except international departments).
  • Private hospitals (Tam Anh, Thu Cuc, Hong Ngoc, Hanh Phuc): packages from antenatal to delivery and postnatal: VND 30–80M (natural–caesarean). Good service, private rooms, some English-speaking doctors.
  • International hospitals (FV, Vinmec, City International): VND 80–200M+ packages; full English, international standards, foreign doctors — the choice of most expat families.

How HI covers childbirth

  • Listed delivery costs (natural/caesarean) are fund-paid at your benefit rate (80% for employees) at HI-contracted facilities.
  • Not covered: on-demand extras — chosen doctors, chosen hours, private/VIP rooms, service epidurals… Most private/international “package” deals are largely non-HI services.
  • Expat reality: most use international health insurance (with maternity) or self-pay packages — check the maternity waiting period (usually 12 months) before planning.

6-step Vietnam birth checklist

  • 1. Choose the hospital at weeks 12–16: early booking locks better prices and slots (international hospitals fill in peak season).
  • 2. Antenatal care where you’ll deliver: continuous-doctor monitoring handles labour better than handovers.
  • 3. Check insurance: what HI/international plans cover, limits, reclaim paperwork.
  • 4. Birth registration: Vietnam-born babies get a birth notification; register birth at the People’s Committee (if one parent is Vietnamese) or with your embassy.
  • 5. Baby’s passport: apply at your embassy right after birth registration — needed for exit.
  • 6. Birth companion: most hospitals allow one family member in the postnatal room — arrange relatives/nannies.

FAQs

Vietnamese nationality for Vietnam-born babies?

Depends on your country’s nationality law and circumstances: children with a Vietnamese father or mother hold Vietnamese nationality (2008 Nationality Law). Two foreign parents → the child takes the parents’ nationality (per their law), not automatically Vietnamese by birthplace.

Elective caesarean on request?

Private/international hospitals usually accommodate it (service fee); public hospitals operate only on medical indication. HI covers surgery on indication only.

Cost overruns in difficult births?

Packages often exclude complex cases — clarify: emergency caesarean, NICU stays, how billed, whether insurance limits suffice.
