Cash Gift Tax: No PIT on Cash & the 4 Taxable Categories

Gift tax

Parents give VND 500M for a house, Tet cash bonuses, thick wedding envelopes — are cash gifts subject to PIT? The answer surprises many: no. Cash isn’t among the 4 taxable gift categories.

Only 4 gift categories are PIT-taxed

Under the PIT Law and Circular 111/2013/TT-BTC, only gifts of these 4 asset types are taxed:

  • 1. Securities: shares, bonds…
  • 2. Capital contributions: stakes in companies/businesses.
  • 3. Real estate: land-use rights, houses, construction works.
  • 4. Registrable assets: cars, motorbikes, boats…

Cash, gold, foreign currency, personal items — outside the 4 → no PIT however large, whoever the giver.

Taxing the 4 categories (from 1/7/2026)

  • Formula: PIT = 10% × (asset value − VND 20M) per receipt (2025 PIT Law, Art. 18 — VND 10M before 1/7/2026).
  • Example: gifted a car worth VND 800M → tax = 10% × (800 − 20)M = VND 78M.

5 exempt family relationships

Gift income is exempt between (PIT Law, Circular 111/2013):

  • Spouses;
  • Biological/adoptive parents and children;
  • Parents-in-law and sons/daughters-in-law;
  • Grandparents and grandchildren;
  • Siblings.

FAQs

Parents give VND 2B cash for a house — taxed?

No — cash isn’t PIT-taxed. (Gifting the house itself differs: real estate is taxable, but parent–child gifts are exempt.)

Company Tet cash bonuses?

That’s employment income — PIT under progressive rates, not “gifts”. Don’t confuse the two.

Gifted gold bars worth VND 500M?

Gold (not securities/capital/real estate/registrable) → no PIT under current rules.
