Crypto Money Transfers in Vietnam: Grey Zone & 5 Scams

Crypto transfers

“Bro, USDT to VND at great rates, no paperwork” — messages like this flood expat chat groups. Crypto money transfers in Vietnam sit in a dangerous grey zone: holding isn’t clearly banned (debated), but using crypto as payment/transfer violates the law, and 99% of “crypto exchange services” are scams or laundering.

Vietnam’s crypto framework: 3 points

  • 1. Not legal tender: crypto isn’t recognised as currency/payment means — using it to pay for goods, services or cross-border transfers violates the law.
  • 2. No complete framework yet: Vietnam is building digital-asset regulation — meanwhile, all unofficial crypto-to-VND trades are unprotected by law.
  • 3. Tax duties: crypto profits are in principle taxable income — but declaration mechanics remain unclear, with back-tax risk when authorities trace money flows.

5 crypto scams targeting foreigners

  • 1. “Great USDT rates”: takes your VND and vanishes; or sends fake USDT/locks the wallet after payment.
  • 2. Fake exchanges: cloned big-exchange sites/apps — deposits enter permanent “maintenance”.
  • 3. “High-yield” investing: entrusted crypto at 2–5%/month — Ponzi; collapse means total loss.
  • 4. Fake support: “exchange support” DMs asking seed phrases/OTPs — wallet drained in a minute.
  • 5. Laundering rentals: high fees to “borrow” your wallet for crypto flows — you become a laundering link (Art. 324 Penal Code).

Foreigners needing transfers: do this instead

  • International bank wires (SWIFT) — lawful, documented, legally protected.
  • Licensed transfer services (Western Union, MoneyGram via licensed banks/agents).
  • Vietnamese banks’ internet banking — international transfers online, no branch visit.

FAQs

Is holding crypto in a personal wallet illegal?

Current law doesn’t ban holding crypto as property (debated zone) — but using it for payments/transfers violates. New frameworks may change this — stay updated.

Scammed on a crypto exchange — report to whom?

Report to the police (criminal/cyber-security divisions) — but recovery from crypto transactions is near-zero: no intermediaries, anonymous scammers.

Paid salary in crypto by a foreign company?

Double risk: payment-regulation violations + unprovable lawful income on VND conversion. Demand bank salary payments.
